THE PROJECT
Together, we can change the world
To combat the social inequality in South Africa, stemming greatly from the limiting English only mentality, Makena traveled to South Africa in November of 2018 to bring an English as a Second Language (ESL) program to the EACC. Working with high school students, local Girl Scout troops, language teachers, and early education specialists, she designed and furbished an ESL program centered around audiovisual and active learning to help the 3-6 year olds at the EACC learn English and put them on the road to a better future.

INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY
We worked with local students and Girl Scouts to create the ESL program. After discussing the history and current political climate in South Africa and the subsequent lack of education funding and poverty, we engaged them into making alphabet books—real ESL supplies for the kids at the EACC. We empowered the kids by involving them to effect real change.
MURALS
Makena traveled to South Africa to bring the ESL program and work with the teachers and children at the EACC. She helped beautify the school and painted a mural with the kids at the EACC as a way to get to know them.

THE ESL PROGRAM
Working with educator and early development specialists, we put together an ESL program that emphasizes audiovisual and active learning. The ESL program surrounds the students with English, rapidly increasing their fluency. With supplies like handmade alphabet books, a projector to show English movies, abc blocks, picture books, and interactive games, we will furnish a better tomorrow starting with these children's education.
